Longevity Supplements: An Honest UK Guide to What Works
"Longevity" is the most exciting story in supplements right now — and the one where marketing outruns evidence by the widest margin. The underlying science is real and fast-moving, but almost none of it has reached the point of an approved health claim in the UK. Here's an honest scorecard of the popular longevity ingredients, followed by what genuinely helps you age well.
The popular longevity ingredients, honestly scored
| Ingredient | The pitch | Where the evidence stands | UK claim? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calcium AKG | "resets your biological age" | Encouraging in animals; human data is early | No |
| Nicotinamide riboside | "restores youthful NAD+" | Raises NAD+ markers; long-term human benefit unproven | No |
| Resveratrol | "the red-wine longevity molecule" | Big early hype; human results modest and mixed | No |
| Urolithin A | "renews your mitochondria" | Genuinely interesting muscle research; still early | No |
| TMG (betaine) | "methylation for healthy ageing" | Supports methylation; one narrow claim at higher doses | Cond. |
Read this row honestly: "No" doesn't mean "useless" — several of these are among the most interesting molecules in ageing research. It means a UK product can describe them and cite the science, but can't promise you extra years. The one partial exception is betaine, which has a single authorised claim (normal homocysteine metabolism) at a specific higher intake.
What actually has evidence for ageing well
It's less glamorous than a capsule, but the strongest longevity "interventions" are the unfashionable basics: regular physical activity (especially strength work), a varied whole-food diet, good sleep, not smoking, and staying socially connected. On the supplement side, the nutrients with real ageing-relevant claims are the ordinary ones — for example vitamin D and calcium for the maintenance of normal bones, and protein for the maintenance of muscle mass. Get those right first; treat the exotic molecules as optional extras you're experimenting with, eyes open.
