Resveratrol in the UK: What It Is, How People Take It & How to Choose
Resveratrol is the compound that launched a thousand "red wine is good for you" headlines โ and it's now a staple of the longevity supplement shelf. This guide is the honest version: what resveratrol is, what's in a formula like ours, which claims are actually allowed, and how to choose a quality product in the UK.
What is resveratrol?
Resveratrol is a polyphenol (specifically a stilbene) that plants make as a defence compound. It's found in the skins of red grapes โ hence the red-wine association โ but the amount in wine is tiny. Supplements use a concentrated source, most commonly Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), standardised to trans-resveratrol, the more studied form. Ours provides 500 mg of trans-resveratrol standardised to 98%.
What's in our 5-in-1 โ and the authorised claims
Our formula pairs trans-resveratrol and quercetin (a companion polyphenol) with three nutrients that carry authorised claims โ usefully, two of them cover the "antioxidant" theme people associate with resveratrol:
Vitamin C and zinc both contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress โ a genuine, label-checkable claim. The trans-resveratrol (500mg) and quercetin (350mg) are included as recognisable ingredients we can't make claims for.
How people take resveratrol
General information only โ follow your product's label. Resveratrol is fat-soluble, so it's typically taken with a meal that contains some fat. Ours is a two-capsule daily serving. Trans-resveratrol is the form most products (and studies) use.
Safety & who should be cautious
How to choose a quality resveratrol supplement
- Trans-resveratrol, standardised. Look for a stated trans-resveratrol amount and a high standardisation (e.g. 98%), not just "resveratrol".
- Sensible companions. Quercetin is a common pairing; added vitamin C, zinc and D bring their own authorised claims.
- Third-party testing with a Certificate of Analysis available.
- Clean label, full disclosure, GMP manufacture, reputable UK seller โ and no anti-ageing promises.
