Zinc & Immune Support in the UK: What Works and How to Choose a Supplement

"Zinc for immunity" is one of the most repeated pieces of supplement advice out there — and, unusually, it's an area where the rules actually let us say something meaningful. This guide explains what zinc is, why it's paired with other nutrients, exactly which claims are allowed, and how to choose a quality product in the UK.

The good news on claims. Unlike botanicals, several vitamins and minerals have authorised GB/EU health claims when a serving provides at least 15% of their Nutrient Reference Value. Our Zinc Plus is built around five of them — so this is one of the few supplement guides where we can tell you, accurately and legally, what the nutrients contribute to.

Five immune-supporting nutrients — and their authorised claims

Each one-capsule serving delivers five nutrients above the 15% NRV threshold. Here's each, with its %NRV and the claims it's authorised to carry:

Zinc
9mg · 90% NRV
normal immune function; protects cells from oxidative stress
Vitamin C
75mg · 94% NRV
normal immune function; reduces tiredness & fatigue
Vitamin D
4µg · 80% NRV
normal immune function; normal bones & muscle
Copper
0.5mg · 50% NRV
normal immune function; normal nervous system
Selenium
50µg · 91% NRV
normal immune function; protects cells from oxidative stress

All five contribute to the normal function of the immune system — a genuine, label-checkable basis for an "immune support" formula. (Black pepper extract is included as a recognisable complementary ingredient; it doesn't carry an authorised claim.)

What is zinc?

Zinc is an essential trace mineral — the body can't make it, so it has to come from diet or supplements. It's involved in a wide range of normal bodily processes. Supplements use different zinc "forms" (the compound the zinc is bound to); ours uses zinc bisglycinate chelate, a well-tolerated chelated form.

How people take zinc

General information only — follow your product's label. Zinc is usually taken once daily; ours is a one-capsule serving. A point worth knowing: very high zinc intakes over long periods can interfere with copper — which is one reason our formula includes copper alongside it.

Safety & who should be cautious

Don't exceed the label. Zinc is beneficial at sensible amounts but unhelpful in excess. Stick to the stated serving, and if you take other supplements containing zinc, factor those in. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, on medication or managing a condition, check with your GP or pharmacist.

How to choose a quality zinc supplement

Why choose Humming Herbs Zinc Plus: everyday use, clean formulation, transparent labelling
  1. Check the %NRV. A claim is only allowed if the nutrient is at 15% NRV or more — the label should show it.
  2. Know the form. Chelated forms (like bisglycinate) are generally well tolerated.
  3. Sensible companions. Copper alongside zinc is a thoughtful touch; added vitamin C, D and selenium each bring their own authorised claims.
  4. Third-party testing with a Certificate of Analysis available.
  5. GMP manufacture, full labelling, and a reputable UK seller.
