Sodium Butyrate (7-in-1) UK Guide: What’s Inside & What It Can Claim

Humming Herbs Sodium Butyrate 7-in-1 capsulesButyrate supplements have taken off in the UK, and they come in more than one form. This one is a butyrate-salt formula: microencapsulated sodium and calcium butyrate, paired with a prebiotic fibre, live bacterial cultures, and two nutrients — zinc and vitamin D. Here's what each part actually is, and — crucially — which benefits the UK rules allow us to state and which we have to leave as background. For the general butyrate primer, see our butyrate guide.

What butyrate is (in one paragraph)

Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid. Your gut bacteria produce it naturally when they ferment dietary fibre, and it's also found in small amounts in foods like butter. A butyrate supplement simply provides it directly in capsule form. That's the factual picture — and it's worth being upfront that, in Great Britain, butyrate itself carries no authorised health claim, so what you may read about it online stays in the "interesting research" column rather than anything a product can promise.

What's in this 7-in-1 formula

Per serving (2 capsules)Amount%NRV
Sodium butyrate (microencapsulated)600 mg
Calcium butyrate200 mg
Inulin-FOS (prebiotic fibre)500 mg
Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG5 billion CFU
Bifidobacterium lactis BB-125 billion CFU
Zinc (zinc citrate)7.5 mg75%
Vitamin D34 µg80%

† No Nutrient Reference Value established; no authorised UK health claim.

Inulin-FOS is a prebiotic fibre — a food source for gut bacteria. The two named strains are live bacterial cultures (often called probiotics). All three are described here so you know what's in the capsule; none of them carries an authorised UK health claim, so we're not attaching a benefit to them.

What we can legitimately say

The authorised claims in this product come from its two nutrients, both supplied at a meaningful share of the NRV:

  • Zinc (75% NRV) contributes to the normal function of the immune system, the protection of cells from oxidative stress, and normal cognitive function.
  • Vitamin D (80% NRV) contributes to the normal function of the immune system and the maintenance of normal bones and muscle function.

Read gut supplements carefully. A butyrate-plus-prebiotic-plus-cultures formula naturally invites "gut health" language — but in Great Britain there are no authorised digestive or gut-health claims for butyrate, prebiotic fibre or live cultures. Any legitimate benefit statement on a product like this traces back to the vitamins and minerals (here, zinc and vitamin D), not the butyrate blend.

Salt form vs triglyceride form

This product delivers butyrate as salts (sodium and calcium butyrate), microencapsulated to help it travel further before release. A different approach uses tributyrin, where butyrate is bound into a triglyceride. If you're weighing up the two delivery styles, see our tributyrin guide for the comparison.

How to take it

The serving is two capsules a day, giving a 60-day supply from the 120-capsule tub. Take with water; some people prefer with food. Follow the label and don't exceed the stated dose. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication (live cultures and supplements can matter if your immune system is compromised), or under medical care, check with your doctor or pharmacist first. Supplements don't replace a varied, balanced diet.
