Butyrate in the UK: What It Is, the Different Forms, and How to Choose a Supplement

Butyrate is one of the fastest-growing names in gut-health supplements — but it comes in several different forms, and the marketing often runs ahead of what's actually allowed to be said about it. This guide is the plain-English version: what butyrate is, the forms you'll see, how people take it, and how to choose a quality product in the UK.

Let's be upfront. In the UK, butyrate is sold as a food supplement — not a medicine. Food supplements cannot legally claim to treat, prevent or cure any condition, and there is no authorised health claim for butyrate itself. So we won't tell you what butyrate "does". Where a formula contains a nutrient that does carry an authorised claim — here, the calcium in our calcium-butyrate salt — we'll point it out clearly.

What is butyrate?

Butyrate (butyric acid) is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA). In the body it's produced naturally when gut bacteria ferment dietary fibre. As a supplement it's supplied in a more stable, measured form — usually as a butyrate salt (bound to a mineral such as calcium or magnesium), which is easier to handle and dose than the raw acid.

The forms you'll see

Butyrate salts
Calcium and/or magnesium butyrate — stable, measured, and the mineral itself may carry authorised claims. This is our Complex.
Tributyrin
A triglyceride form (three butyrate units on a glycerol backbone), marketed on how it's handled by the body.
Sodium butyrate
A sodium salt of butyrate, common in gut-support blends.

What's in our Butyrate Complex

Our 2-in-1 pairs two butyrate salts. Here's the per-serving breakdown (2 capsules), from the Supplement Facts:

What's inside each serving (2 capsules) Calcium Butyrate 700 mg Magnesium Butyrate 300 mg ↳ Calcium providedcarries authorised claims (≥15% NRV) 131 mg · 16% NRV ↳ Magnesium provided 37 mg · 10% NRV

The calcium connection

Because our complex uses calcium butyrate, each serving provides 131 mg of calcium — that's 16% of the Nutrient Reference Value, above the 15% needed to make calcium's authorised claims. So while we can't make claims for butyrate, we can accurately say:

  • Calcium contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
  • Calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes.
  • Calcium contributes to normal muscle function and is needed for the maintenance of normal bones.

(The magnesium in the complex is present at 10% NRV — below the 15% threshold — so we don't make magnesium claims.)

How people take butyrate

General information only — follow your product's label and ask a pharmacist if unsure. Butyrate is typically taken with food as part of a daily routine; ours provides a 1000 mg butyrate complex across two capsules. Some people prefer to build up gradually.

Safety & who should be cautious

Check first if you take medication or manage a condition. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, taking any medicine or managing a health condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking butyrate.
  • Digestive effects — some people notice mild digestive changes at first; taking it with food can help.
  • Before surgery — tell your medical team about any supplements you take.

How to choose a quality butyrate supplement

Why choose Humming Herbs Butyrate Complex: everyday use, clean formulation, transparent labelling
  1. Know the form. Butyrate salt, tributyrin or sodium butyrate — each is different; the label should tell you.
  2. Strength per serving and, for salts, the mineral amounts (and their %NRV).
  3. Third-party testing with a Certificate of Analysis available.
  4. Clean label with full ingredient and allergen disclosure.
  5. GMP manufacture and a reputable UK seller making no dramatic health claims.
