Does anything in this formula carry an authorised claim?

Yes - the calcium does, and one of its authorised claims is directly relevant to a digestive product. Calcium contributes to the normal function of digestive enzymes. Also, Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones. Calcium contributes to normal muscle function. A two-capsule serving provides 131mg of calcium, 16% of the NRV. The butyrate itself is declared by name and amount only: no authorised claim exists for butyrate in Great Britain, so we make none.

How do I take it, and how long does one pot last?

A serving is 2 capsules a day. The pot holds 120 capsules, so that is 60 servings - two months at one serving a day. Fuller directions are being added to this page; in the meantime, the general advice for any capsule is to take the serving with a glass of water, with or without food, at a time of day you will remember. Do not exceed the stated recommended daily dose.

Why are the butyrates supplied as calcium and magnesium salts?

Butyric acid on its own is an oily liquid with a famously strong smell. Binding it to calcium and magnesium produces a stable powder that can be put into a capsule. The trade-off is that some of the capsule weight is the mineral rather than the butyrate, which is why we declare both: 700mg calcium butyrate and 300mg magnesium butyrate, providing 131mg of calcium and 37mg of magnesium.

Why does the label mention calcium's contribution but not magnesium's?

Because of the 15% rule. A product may only make a nutrient's authorised claim if a daily serving provides at least 15% of that nutrient's Nutrient Reference Value. The calcium here is 16% NRV, so it qualifies. The magnesium is 10% NRV, so it does not, and we make no magnesium claim on this product even though magnesium is genuinely in it. We would rather explain the rule than quietly step around it.
