Boswellia Serrata in the UK: What It Is, Safety & How to Choose

Boswellia โ€” the resin of the frankincense tree โ€” is one of the oldest botanicals in the book, and a modern favourite in "mobility" and "joint" formulas. This guide keeps it honest: what boswellia is, what's in a blend like ours, which parts carry authorised claims, the safety points that matter, and how to choose well in the UK.

Humming Herbs Boswellia Serrata 8-in-1 โ€” with willow bark, meadowsweet, nettle, green tea and rosemary
Let's be upfront. In the UK, boswellia is sold as a food supplement โ€” not a medicine. Food supplements cannot legally claim to treat, prevent or cure any condition, and the botanicals in this formula have no authorised health claims. You'll see boswellia discussed around joints and mobility; we're not able to make those claims, and we won't. Where a formula contains a nutrient that does carry an authorised claim โ€” here, the added vitamin D โ€” we'll point it out.

What is boswellia?

Boswellia serrata is a tree native to India, whose resin (a type of frankincense) has a long history in traditional practice. Supplement extracts are standardised to boswellic acids, and often to a specific one called AKBA โ€” ours is standardised to 65% boswellic acids and 30% AKBA. It's the boswellic-acid content, not just the milligrams of "boswellia", that quality products are built around.

What's in our 8-in-1 blend

Our formula surrounds boswellia with a blend of traditional botanicals, plus vitamin D. We can't make claims for the botanicals, but they're clearly labelled so you know exactly what's inside:

Boswellia Serrata
500mg โ€” the frankincense-tree resin extract, standardised to boswellic acids and AKBA.
White Willow Bark
200mg โ€” a traditional botanical; note it contains salicin (see safety).
Meadowsweet
100mg โ€” a traditional herb (Filipendula ulmaria).
Nettle Leaf
100mg โ€” a familiar plant, standardised for silica.
Green Tea
100mg โ€” standardised to EGCG.
Rosemary
50mg โ€” a culinary herb standardised to rosmarinic acid.

The nutrient with an authorised claim

Each serving provides vitamin D (4ยตg, 80% NRV) โ€” and vitamin D carries authorised claims that are relevant to a mobility formula: it contributes to normal muscle function and to the maintenance of normal bones (as well as normal immune function). That's a genuine, label-checkable part of the product.

Safety โ€” the willow bark point matters

Important: this blend contains white willow bark. Willow bark naturally contains salicin, which the body converts to a salicylate (related to aspirin). Because of that, do not take this product if you are allergic to aspirin/salicylates, if you take blood-thinning medication or other NSAIDs, or if aspirin is not suitable for you. It's also not suitable in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or for children. If in any doubt, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.

How people take boswellia

General information only โ€” follow your product's label. Boswellia is typically taken daily with food; ours is a two-capsule serving. Because it's fat-soluble, taking it with a meal can help.

How to choose a quality boswellia supplement

  1. Standardised boswellic acids (and AKBA). This is the meaningful measure โ€” look for stated percentages, not just "boswellia 500mg".
  2. Know the full blend. Especially any willow bark, given the aspirin-related caution above.
  3. Third-party testing with a Certificate of Analysis available.
  4. Clean label, full disclosure, GMP manufacture, reputable UK seller โ€” no "joint cure" claims.
