Astaxanthin in the UK: What It Is, How People Take It & How to Choose

Astaxanthin is the deep-red carotenoid behind a lot of "antioxidant" and "eye & skin" marketing โ€” and behind the pink of salmon and flamingos. This guide is the grounded version: what astaxanthin actually is, what's in a formula like ours, which claims are genuinely allowed, and how to choose a quality product in the UK.

Humming Herbs Astaxanthin with lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin E
Let's be upfront. In the UK, astaxanthin is sold as a food supplement โ€” not a medicine. Food supplements cannot claim to treat, prevent or cure any condition, and astaxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin have no authorised health claims. So we won't tell you what they "do". Where a formula contains a nutrient that does carry an authorised claim โ€” here, the added vitamin E โ€” we'll say so.

What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid โ€” a naturally coloured plant/algae compound โ€” and one of the most vivid, giving a deep red-orange. The premium source is the freshwater microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, which produces astaxanthin when stressed; it then works its way up the food chain into salmon, trout and shellfish. Ours is a natural astaxanthin standardised from that algae.

What's in our 5-in-1 formula

Our formula combines three carotenoids with vitamin E and a little black pepper extract. The carotenoids are included as recognisable ingredients we can't make claims for:

Astaxanthin
12mg โ€” a red carotenoid from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis; the pigment that makes salmon and flamingos pink.
Lutein & Zeaxanthin
10mg + 2mg โ€” carotenoids from marigold, concentrated naturally in the eye.

The nutrient with an authorised claim

Each serving provides vitamin E (15mg, well above the 15% NRV threshold) โ€” and vitamin E carries the authorised claim that it contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Since "antioxidant" is exactly the theme people associate with astaxanthin, it's worth knowing this is the part of the formula that can actually make that kind of claim โ€” properly, and attributed to vitamin E.

How people take astaxanthin

General information only โ€” follow your product's label. Astaxanthin is fat-soluble, so it's typically taken with a meal containing some fat, which helps absorption. Ours is a convenient one-capsule daily serving. Don't be alarmed by the deep colour of the capsule contents โ€” that's simply the natural pigment.

Safety & who should be cautious

Check first if relevant. Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or managing a health condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist before supplementing.

How to choose a quality astaxanthin supplement

Why choose Humming Herbs Astaxanthin: everyday use, clean formulation, transparent labelling
  1. Natural, algae-sourced astaxanthin. Look for Haematococcus pluvialis and a stated milligram amount.
  2. Meaningful companions. Vitamin E adds its own authorised oxidative-stress claim; lutein and zeaxanthin should be at stated amounts if they matter to you.
  3. Third-party testing with a Certificate of Analysis available.
  4. Clean label, full disclosure, GMP manufacture, reputable UK seller with no dramatic claims.
